UK CV Format 2026: Writing for Skilled Worker Visa Sponsorship

UK CV Format 2026 for Sponsorship Applicants

A UK CV from a candidate who needs a visa is doing two jobs at once. The first is the normal one: showing you can do the role. The second is showing that hiring you is administratively manageable.

Most candidates do the first well and ignore the second entirely, then wonder why applications go unanswered.

The UK's Skilled Worker route requires a job offer from an employer holding a sponsor licence, at or above a salary threshold, for an eligible occupation. The thresholds, occupation codes and rules are set by the Home Office and change, sometimes substantially, and sometimes at short notice. Check the current position on GOV.UK. Nothing here is immigration advice.

Only Apply to Licensed Sponsors

The most useful thing you can do costs nothing and happens before you write anything.

The Home Office publishes a register of licensed sponsors. An employer not on it cannot sponsor you, no matter how well the interview goes. Filtering your applications against that register will do more for your response rate than any CV improvement.

A licence also does not guarantee willingness: some licensed employers sponsor only for specific senior roles. But applying to unlicensed employers is guaranteed to fail.

State Your Position Plainly

One line under your contact details. Do not bury it, and do not hide it.

Candidates often omit visa status hoping to get to interview before the question arises. This backfires. Recruiters who discover it late feel misled, and you have consumed everyone's time. Recruiters who are open to sponsorship cannot identify you if you say nothing.

Write whichever applies:

  • "British citizen" or "Right to work in the UK, no sponsorship required"
  • "UK Graduate Route visa, valid to [month/year]"
  • "Skilled Worker visa, currently sponsored, seeking transfer of sponsorship"
  • "Requires Skilled Worker sponsorship"

If you hold a Graduate Route visa, say so prominently. You can work without sponsorship for its duration, and many employers who will not sponsor from overseas will happily hire someone already in the UK with work rights.

Make the Occupation Match Visible

Eligibility runs through occupation codes. A recruiter or HR team assessing whether a role can be sponsored is mapping your experience onto the role's occupation classification.

You can help by using the standard job title for your profession rather than an internal or invented one. "Software Engineer" travels. "Digital Ninja" does not. If your current title is unusual, put the standard equivalent in brackets after it.

Where a role appears on any current shortage or immigration salary list, that is worth knowing, but verify against GOV.UK rather than a recruitment blog, as these lists are revised.

UK CV Conventions

Length. Two pages. This is a firm norm. One page reads as thin for anyone with experience; three is for academia and senior technical roles only.

No photograph. UK convention is firmly against it. Equality legislation makes employers wary of holding images, and some will discard a CV carrying one.

Omit: date of birth, age, marital status, nationality beyond your work-rights line, religion, gender, and National Insurance number. Never put an NI number on a CV.

Location: city or region is enough. "Manchester" or "London, SE1".

Spelling: British throughout. Organisation, specialise, centre, analyse, programme.

Structure:

  1. Name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn, right-to-work line
  2. Personal statement: three or four lines
  3. Key skills
  4. Professional experience, reverse chronological, achievement-led
  5. Education, with institution and year
  6. Certifications and professional memberships
  7. References available on request

Cover letter. More commonly read in the UK than the US. One page, addressed to a named person where possible.

Contextualise Overseas Experience

British recruiters will not recognise most overseas employers or universities. Add a brief descriptor to each employer: sector, size, market. For qualifications, if you have a UK ENIC statement of comparability, state the UK equivalent.

For regulated professions (medicine, nursing, engineering, law, accountancy, teaching, architecture), state your UK registration status with the relevant body, or the stage you have reached. Registration and visa eligibility are separate processes and employers will check both.

Salary

Do not put salary history or expectations on a UK CV. It is not conventional and it is not asked for at application stage.

Be aware, though, that Skilled Worker eligibility involves salary thresholds. A role that pays below the applicable threshold cannot be sponsored regardless of fit, which is a reason to be realistic about which roles to target.

The ATS Layer

Heavy use across UK large employers, the NHS, the civil service and recruitment agencies. Single column, standard headings, no tables or text boxes, PDF unless the posting asks for Word. Some UK agencies do. See how ATS filters resumes.

Common Mistakes

  • Applying to employers with no sponsor licence
  • Visa status concealed until interview
  • Photograph, date of birth or NI number included
  • Non-standard job title that breaks occupation mapping
  • Three-page CV
  • US spelling
  • Overseas employers and degrees with no UK context

Frequently asked questions

Should I mention that I need visa sponsorship on my UK CV?

Yes, plainly, in one line near the top: "Requires Skilled Worker sponsorship". Hiding it wastes everyone's time and licensed sponsors will ask anyway.

How do I find UK employers that can sponsor me?

Check the Home Office register of licensed sponsors on GOV.UK before applying. Only employers on that register can issue a Certificate of Sponsorship.

How long should a UK CV be?

Two pages. Single column, no photo, no date of birth, with a short personal profile at the top and reverse-chronological experience.

Does my job title need to match a Skilled Worker occupation code?

The employer maps the role to an eligible occupation code, but making the match visible in your CV (title, duties, level) helps them see that sponsorship is straightforward.
