Teacher Resume Guide 2026
School districts hire through applicant tracking systems just as corporations do, and the first screen is administrative: is the candidate certified for this state, subject and grade band. Only after that does a principal read for what happened in the classroom. Teacher resumes tend to describe the job ("planned lessons, assessed students, communicated with parents") in a way that does not distinguish one applicant from another. The ones that get interviews name the outcomes: pass rates, growth data, programs built, and the scale at which they were achieved.
This guide covers the certification line, scope, outcome evidence and examples for elementary, secondary and special education resumes in the US.

Texas Standard Certificate: Mathematics 7–12, ESL Supplemental · Expires 2029 · TExES Math 7–12 (passed 2019)
State, subject, grade band, endorsements and expiry. If you are certified in one state and applying in another, say so and note reciprocity status or the application in progress. District HR filters on this before anything else.

Curriculum, Technology and Keywords

What Weakens a Teacher Resume
- Certification missing or buried.
- Generic duties with no student data.
- A philosophy-of-education paragraph instead of a summary.
- Every school listed with the same four bullets.
- A two-page resume for under five years of experience.
- A decorative template. District systems parse resumes like any other; see the ATS format guide.
Templates That Parse Cleanly
Harvard Resume Template: the single-column academic-standard layout and the most downloaded template on CVEdge. Set it to Letter and it is the safest US default.
Classic Resume Template: standard headings, no graphics, parses cleanly in Greenhouse, Workday, Lever and iCIMS.
Executive Resume Template: for senior candidates who need the summary and leadership scope to land before the role history.

Frequently asked questions
Where does teaching certification go on a resume?
In the header, directly under your contact details: state, subject, grade band, endorsements and expiry. District HR filters on it before reading the rest.
Can I use student test scores on my resume?
Yes, as aggregate outcomes for your sections or programs: pass rates, growth percentiles, goal attainment. Never identify individual students.
How long should a teacher resume be?
One page for under about eight years, two for experienced teachers with leadership roles, coaching or multiple certifications. Student teaching counts as experience for new teachers.
Should I include a teaching philosophy?
No. Districts that want one ask for it as a separate document. The summary should state your certification, experience and one headline outcome.
