Cloud Engineer Resume Guide 2026
Cloud engineering produces numbers as a by-product of the work: monthly spend, uptime, deployment counts, migration scope, incident durations. Yet most cloud resumes list services (EC2, S3, Lambda, EKS) as if the list itself were an achievement. A recruiter searching for an AWS engineer finds hundreds of resumes with the same list; the ones that get opened are the ones where the services appear inside results.
This guide covers the metrics cloud engineers can claim, how to write migration and cost bullets, which certifications are worth their line, and the format that survives the applicant tracking systems at large employers.
The Summary
Cloud engineer with 6 years on AWS, most recently owning the platform for a consumer app with 4M monthly users. Cut monthly AWS spend from $310K to $190K over a year with rightsizing, Savings Plans and storage tiering; led the migration of 40 services from EC2 to EKS with zero customer-facing downtime. AWS Solutions Architect Professional.
Platform, scale, a cost number and a reliability number, then the credential. That is the whole calibration a hiring manager needs.
Metrics a Cloud Engineer Can Claim
- Cost: monthly or annual spend before and after; percentage saved; unit cost (per request, per customer).
- Reliability: availability (99.9% to 99.99%), incident count and mean time to recovery, error budgets met.
- Scale: requests per second, data volume, number of accounts, regions, services, clusters.
- Delivery: deployment frequency, lead time, change-failure rate.
- Migration: number of workloads, cutover downtime, timeline against plan.
- Security and compliance: findings remediated, audits passed (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA), guardrails enforced.
Bullet Rewrites
Before: Managed AWS infrastructure using Terraform.
After: Rebuilt the AWS estate (14 accounts, 3 regions) as Terraform modules with a CI pipeline; provisioning time for a new environment fell from 2 days to 40 minutes.
Before: Worked on cost optimisation initiatives.
After: Cut AWS spend 39% ($1.4M annualised) through rightsizing, Compute Savings Plans, S3 Intelligent-Tiering and deleting 60TB of orphaned EBS snapshots; built a per-team cost dashboard in Cost Explorer.
Before: Migrated applications to Kubernetes.
After: Led the migration of 40 microservices from EC2 Auto Scaling groups to EKS over 9 months; zero customer-facing downtime; p99 latency improved 22% from better bin-packing.
Before: Handled on-call and incident response.
After: On-call lead for a platform at 99.95% availability; cut mean time to recovery from 48 to 17 minutes with runbooks, Datadog SLO alerts and automated failover for the primary database.
Before: Implemented security best practices.
After: Rolled out AWS Organizations SCPs, GuardDuty and Security Hub across 14 accounts; remediated 210 high-severity findings and passed SOC 2 Type II with no infrastructure exceptions.
Skills Section
Group by category so each line is searchable and the list reads as considered rather than dumped.
- Cloud: AWS (EC2, EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, CloudFront, IAM, Organizations), Azure (AKS, Functions), GCP (GKE)
- Infrastructure as code: Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi, Ansible
- Containers and orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, ArgoCD
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins
- Observability: Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, OpenTelemetry
- Languages: Python, Go, Bash
- Security and compliance: IAM, KMS, GuardDuty, SOC 2, HIPAA
Certifications
List current ones with the year. Recruiters search for the exact names: AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate, Professional), AWS DevOps Engineer Professional, Azure Administrator (AZ-104), Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Google Professional Cloud Architect, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), HashiCorp Terraform Associate. Entry-level certifications (Cloud Practitioner) can be dropped once you hold an associate or professional level.
Levels
- Junior: projects and labs with real deployments count; state what ran, at what scale, for how long.
- Mid: ownership of a platform area with cost or reliability numbers.
- Senior and staff: architecture decisions with the trade-off named, multi-team impact, migrations led, cost programs owned, mentoring and standards.
What Weakens a Cloud Resume
- A wall of service names with no results.
- No cost, availability or scale numbers anywhere.
- Certifications listed without dates, or expired.
- Two-column layouts with the skills sidebar that applicant tracking systems merge into the experience text. See the ATS format guide.
- Claiming "expert" in six clouds. Depth in one with working knowledge of another is more credible.
Templates That Parse Cleanly
Harvard Resume Template: the single-column academic-standard layout and the most downloaded template on CVEdge. Set it to Letter and it is the safest US default.
Classic Resume Template: standard headings, no graphics, parses cleanly in Greenhouse, Workday, Lever and iCIMS.
Executive Resume Template: for senior candidates who need the summary and leadership scope to land before the role history.

Frequently asked questions
Which AWS certification matters most on a resume?
Solutions Architect Associate is the common screen; Solutions Architect Professional and DevOps Engineer Professional differentiate. List the exact names with years, because recruiters search on them.
How do I show cloud experience without production access?
Personal projects deployed for real: a service running on a free tier for months, a Terraform repo on GitHub, a cost report you produced. State what ran, at what scale, and link to it.
Should I list every AWS service I have touched?
No. List the services you have run in production and group them by purpose. Twenty service names read as a dump; ten inside results read as experience.
Cloud engineer or DevOps engineer on my title line?
Use the title the posting uses. If your work spans both, keep your official title and let the summary state the scope: platform, cost, reliability, delivery.
