Accountant Resume Guide 2026

Accounting is a field where the resume can be precise, because the work is measured: close cycles have day counts, audits have findings, reconciliations have volumes, and every company has a revenue figure. Most accountant resumes still read as task lists ("prepared journal entries, performed reconciliations, assisted with audit") that could describe any accountant at any company. The candidates who get interviews are the ones whose resumes give the scale of the books, the systems they ran, and what improved on their watch.

This guide covers the license line, scope, metrics and bullet rewrites for staff, senior, manager and public-accounting roles in the US.

License and Credentials in the Header

Priya Natarajan, CPA Chicago, IL · (312) 555-0119 · priya.natarajan@email.com · linkedin.com/in/priyanatarajan

CPA, Illinois (active, 2021) · CMA candidate (Part 1 passed) · MS Accounting

Recruiters filter on CPA status and state. If you have passed some exam sections, say which; if you are eligible and sitting, say when. Do not leave it to the education section.

Summary With Scale

Senior accountant (CPA) with 6 years across Big Four audit and a $200M SaaS company. Own month-end close for three entities; cut close from 10 business days to 5 by automating reconciliations in NetSuite and BlackLine. Led the first SOX 404 readiness for a pre-IPO company.

Scope Line Under Each Role

Senior Accountant, Lakeshore Software (Chicago, IL) · Jan 2023 – Present Scope: $200M revenue, 3 entities, 2 currencies; general ledger, revenue recognition (ASC 606), fixed assets; NetSuite, BlackLine, Coupa; team of 2 staff accountants.

Revenue, entities, currencies, areas owned and systems are what a hiring manager uses to match you to their books.

Metrics That Accountants Can Claim

  • Close cycle length and its change
  • Number and dollar value of accounts reconciled monthly
  • Audit outcomes: findings, adjustments, deficiencies, clean opinions
  • Process automation: hours saved, manual entries eliminated
  • Volumes: invoices, journal entries, fixed assets, intercompany transactions
  • Accuracy: restatements avoided, variance thresholds met
  • Tax: returns filed, refunds secured, penalties avoided
  • Cash: DSO improvements, collections, working capital freed

Bullet Rewrites

Before: Performed month-end close activities and prepared journal entries.

Before: Prepared tax returns for clients.

After: Prepared and reviewed 120 partnership and S-corp returns a season for a 40-client portfolio; identified R&D credits worth $340K across four clients.

Public Accounting Roles

For audit and tax staff and seniors, give the industries served, client size range, the engagement role and any lead responsibilities.

Audit Senior, Deloitte (Chicago, IL) · Sep 2019 – Dec 2022 Led fieldwork on 6 to 8 engagements a year for manufacturing and technology clients ($50M to $2B revenue); supervised teams of 3 to 5; primary reviewer for revenue and inventory testing.

Systems Section

ERP and close tools are searchable keywords and often hard requirements: NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics, Workday Financials, BlackLine, FloQast, Coupa, Bill.com, Expensify, Avalara, Vertex. Excel skills belong here only if specific: Power Query, pivot tables, index-match, VBA. Add data tools if you use them: SQL, Tableau, Power BI.

Accounting Manager and Controller

Add team size, entities, audit and tax oversight, and system implementations. Board or lender reporting, covenant compliance, and IPO or acquisition work are the differentiators.

Controller, Ridgeline Manufacturing ($320M, 4 plants) · Team of 11; led the ERP migration from Sage to NetSuite on time and $200K under budget; monthly reporting package to a PE board; covenant compliance across a $60M credit facility.

What Weakens an Accountant Resume

  • CPA status not stated or buried in education.
  • No revenue, entity count or system names anywhere.
  • Every bullet starting with "assisted" or "responsible for".
  • Listing GAAP, "attention to detail" and "Excel" as skills without specifics.
  • A two-column or graphic template. Accounting firms and finance departments hire through the same applicant tracking systems as everyone else; see the ATS format guide.

Templates That Parse Cleanly

Harvard Resume Template: the single-column academic-standard layout and the most downloaded template on CVEdge. Set it to Letter and it is the safest US default.

Classic Resume Template: standard headings, no graphics, parses cleanly in Greenhouse, Workday, Lever and iCIMS.

Executive Resume Template: for senior candidates who need the summary and leadership scope to land before the role history.

Frequently asked questions

Where should CPA go on a resume?

After your name in the header and in a credentials line under your contact details, with the state and year. Recruiters filter on it before reading the body.

How do I show accounting results if my work is routine?

Use scale and change: the size of the books, the number of entities or transactions, the close cycle, audit outcomes and any process you automated or shortened. Routine work at stated scale with a measurable improvement is exactly what hiring managers want to see.

Should I list every accounting system I have used?

List the ones you could work in today, with the primary ERP first. Recruiters search by system name, so an omitted NetSuite or SAP can cost you a match.

One page or two for an accountant?

One page for staff and senior roles, two for managers and controllers with implementations and teams to describe.
