Internship Resume for College Students
Internship applications at large employers go through the same portals and applicant tracking systems as full-time roles, and are screened by recruiters who read hundreds of nearly identical student resumes. The ones that get interviews are not the ones with the most impressive university or the highest GPA; they are the ones where every line carries a specific detail (a tool, a number, a name) that makes the student's work real. This guide covers the structure, what to lead with at each stage of study, and a full example.
One Page, Always
An internship resume is one page. Letter size, single column, standard headings, 10.5 to 11.5 point type. If it does not fill the page, add a projects section rather than lengthening descriptions; if it overflows, cut coursework and older activities first.
Section Order
- Contact block: name, city and state, phone, email, LinkedIn, GitHub or portfolio if relevant. No address, no photo.
- Education: degree, major, school, expected graduation month and year, GPA if 3.5 or above, one line of relevant coursework, honours.
- Experience: previous internships, part-time and campus jobs, research positions.
- Projects: class, personal, hackathon and club projects with a result.
- Skills: languages, tools, software, grouped.
- Activities and leadership: only with a role and a result.
Education stays on top until your first full-time job.
What to Lead With by Year
- First and second year: education, then projects and any job at all. Employers hiring sophomores are screening for tools learned and things finished.
- Third year: a previous internship if you have one, then projects. This is the year the projects section matters most.
- Final year: internships first, with results; projects second.
Turning Student Work Into Results
The formula is verb, specific work, measurable outcome, at whatever scale you have.
Before: Worked on a group project building a web app for a class.
After: Built the backend (Node, PostgreSQL) for a four-person class project, a course-review app that 180 students used during the semester; wrote 60 unit tests and deployed on Render.
Before: Cashier at a grocery store.
After: Handled 200+ transactions a shift at a high-volume grocery store; trained 4 new cashiers; zero register discrepancies over 14 months.
Before: Member of the investment club.
After: Analyst in a 40-member student investment fund managing $120K; pitched and won inclusion of two positions that returned 18% over the year.
Before: Research assistant in a biology lab.
After: Ran PCR and gel electrophoresis for a 12-month study of plant stress genes; managed a 400-sample database in Excel and co-authored the poster presented at the department symposium.
GPA and Coursework
Include GPA if it is 3.5 or above; omit it below that. Major GPA can be shown instead if it is stronger, labelled as such. Relevant coursework is one line of four to six courses that match the internship, not a transcript.
Skills
Tools and languages only, grouped: Languages, Frameworks, Tools, Software. No soft skills. List what you could be asked about in an interview; a language from one lecture does not belong.

Timing
Large employers recruit summer interns from August to November of the previous year. Have the resume ready before the fall career fair, and expect to submit it through a portal that parses it; the Workday guide covers what to check after uploading.
Mistakes
- Two pages.
- An objective statement.
- A photo, date of birth or full address.
- Listing every course and every club.
- A template with columns or icons. Campus recruiting systems parse resumes like any other; see the ATS format guide.
- The same resume for every posting. Reorder projects and adjust the skills line to match each role.
Templates That Parse Cleanly
Harvard Resume Template: the single-column academic-standard layout and the most downloaded template on CVEdge. Set it to Letter and it is the safest US default.
Classic Resume Template: standard headings, no graphics, parses cleanly in Greenhouse, Workday, Lever and iCIMS.
Executive Resume Template: for senior candidates who need the summary and leadership scope to land before the role history.

Frequently asked questions
Should a college student include GPA on an internship resume?
Yes if it is 3.5 or above, or if the posting asks for it. Otherwise leave it off; an omitted GPA is not assumed to be low.
What if I have no internships yet?
Lead with projects, campus jobs, research and clubs where you held a role, each written with a tool and a result. A student with two strong projects and a part-time job has plenty for one page.
Do internship resumes go through ATS?
At large employers, yes. Campus recruiting uses the same portals as full-time hiring. Use a single-column layout with standard headings and check the parsed fields after uploading.
Should I include high school on my resume?
Only in first year, and only for a notable achievement. From second year on, university education replaces it.
