How to Write a Resume With No Experience
"No experience" almost never means no evidence. It means the evidence is in places a standard resume template does not have a heading for: a semester project, a part-time job, a club you ran, a volunteer role, a piece of code on GitHub. The task is to find that evidence, write it the way an employer reads experience, and arrange it so the strongest material is on top.
This guide is written for students and new graduates applying to US employers, where the resume is one page, Letter size, and led by results rather than by a list of courses.
What Employers Are Actually Screening For
An entry-level hiring manager is not looking for a track record. They are looking for three signals: that you can finish things, that you can learn a tool or a domain quickly, and that you will show up and communicate. Every section of your resume should be evidence for one of those.
Section Order for a First Resume
- Contact block: name, city and state, phone, email, LinkedIn, GitHub or portfolio if relevant.
- Summary: two lines. Degree and expected date, then the single strongest thing you have done.
- Education: degree, major, school, expected graduation, GPA if 3.5 or above. Relevant coursework as one line, only if it maps to the job.
- Experience: internships, part-time jobs, research assistantships, campus jobs. All of them count.
- Projects: the section that does the most work on an entry-level resume.
- Skills: tools and languages, grouped. No soft skills.
- Leadership and activities: only with a role and a result.
Education goes above Experience only until you have your first full-time role. After that it moves down.
Turning What You Have Into Results
The formula is the same as for experienced candidates: verb, specific work, measurable outcome. The numbers are smaller and that is fine. What matters is that there is one.
Part-time and campus jobs
Before: Worked as a barista at a campus coffee shop.
After: Ran the morning shift at a 400-customer-a-day campus café; trained six new hires and cut average wait time during rush from 7 to 4 minutes by reorganising the pickup counter.
A retail, restaurant or campus job demonstrates reliability, pace and customer handling. Employers know this. Write it with a number and it stops looking like filler.
Class and capstone projects
Before: Completed a capstone project on machine learning.
After: Built a churn-prediction model in Python (scikit-learn) on 50K customer records for a capstone sponsored by a regional bank; reached 0.83 AUC and presented findings to the bank's analytics team.
Name the tools, the scale of the data or users, and who it was for. A project with an external sponsor or a real user is worth more than a larger project with neither.
Research
Led data collection for a psychology lab study of 120 participants; cleaned and coded survey responses in R and co-authored the poster presented at a regional conference.
Clubs, sports and volunteering
Only with a role and a result. "Member of the finance club" says nothing; "Treasurer of a 60-member finance club; managed a $12K budget and ran a stock-pitch competition with 40 entrants" says a great deal.
Personal projects and open source
A live app, a published package, a contribution merged into a known repository. Link to it. State what it does and, if you can, how many people use it.

That is a full page with no full-time job on it, and every line carries a number or a name.
Mistakes That Sink First Resumes
- A two-page resume. Nothing about a first resume needs a second page.
- An objective statement. Use the two-line summary instead.
- Listing every course. One line of the relevant ones.
- Soft skills in the skills section. Employers infer them from your results.
- A photo, date of birth or full address. None belong on a US resume.
- Sending the same resume to every posting. Reorder projects and adjust the summary to match each role; the tailoring guide shows how in five minutes.
- A layout with columns or graphics. Applicant tracking systems parse them badly, and campus recruiting at large employers runs through the same systems. The ATS format guide explains what breaks.
Templates That Parse Cleanly
Harvard Resume Template: the single-column academic-standard layout and the most downloaded template on CVEdge. Set it to Letter and it is the safest US default.
Classic Resume Template: standard headings, no graphics, parses cleanly in Greenhouse, Workday, Lever and iCIMS.
Executive Resume Template: for senior candidates who need the summary and leadership scope to land before the role history.

Frequently asked questions
What do I put on a resume if I have never had a job?
Education, projects, coursework that maps to the role, volunteer work, clubs with a role, and any freelance or family-business work. Write each with a result, however small, and a tool or skill the employer will recognise.
Should I include my GPA?
Yes if it is 3.5 or higher. Below that, leave it off; employers rarely ask, and an omitted GPA is not read as a low one.
Can a resume with no experience be one page?
It should be. A first resume that runs to two pages is padded, and recruiters can tell. If you struggle to fill one page, add a projects section rather than lengthening descriptions.
Do I need a cover letter as a new graduate?
Only when the application asks for one. When it does, keep it to three short paragraphs: why this employer, the one project or job that proves you can do the work, and a direct closing line.
