Do You Need a Photo on Your CV? Country-by-Country Rules for 2026

Do You Need a Photo on Your CV?

There is no global answer, and advice that gives one is wrong. The convention varies sharply by country, it has been shifting for a decade, and there is a technical problem that applies everywhere regardless of local custom.

Start with the technical problem, because it is the part most people have not considered.

The Reason to Hesitate Everywhere

A photograph is not just a photograph. It is a layout decision.

Adding one pushes you toward a header block, a sidebar or a two-column grid — because that is where a photo fits visually. Those are precisely the structures that applicant tracking systems parse worst. Reading order inverts, contact details detach from your name, section headings attach to the wrong content, and in bad cases the parser returns an unusable mess.

So even in markets where a photo is conventional, it carries a cost. Our guide on ATS resume format covers why layout drives parsing outcomes.

If you include one, the safe implementation is a single-column document with the image floated top-right, no text inside or behind it, and no text boxes anywhere. Then verify the result with our free ATS Resume Checker rather than assuming.

Never Include One

United States. Firmly no. Federal and state anti-discrimination law makes employers cautious about holding images of applicants, and many companies have an explicit policy of discarding or redacting resumes with photos. A photo marks you as unfamiliar with US convention.

United Kingdom and Ireland. No. Equality legislation and established convention both point the same way. UK and Irish recruiters do not expect one and some will view it as a liability in their file.

Canada. No. Human rights legislation restricts what employers may consider, and a photo discloses several protected characteristics at once. Photos are routinely removed before a hiring manager sees the file.

Australia and New Zealand. No. Anti-discrimination norms are strong and the convention is settled.

In all five markets, including a photo does not make you memorable. It makes you a problem for the recruiter's compliance process.

Photo Is Conventional

Switzerland. Still broadly expected. A professional headshot is the norm, particularly outside international tech and finance. Omitting one is not fatal but it is a departure from convention.

Germany and Austria. Common, though genuinely optional. The AGG anti-discrimination framework means a photo cannot be required, and some large employers now explicitly ask for anonymised applications. Traditional Mittelstand employers and client-facing roles still expect one; Berlin tech does not. Read the posting.

Much of southern and eastern Europe. Photos remain common in France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Poland and neighbouring markets, though the trend is toward optional. No strong penalty either way.

Parts of East and Southeast Asia. Photos are conventional in Japan, South Korea, China, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, and standardised application forms in Japan and Korea have a designated photo field. Follow the local form.

Mixed, and Changing

The Gulf — UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain. Once effectively mandatory, now genuinely optional at most large employers. Multinationals and large regional groups no longer expect one; some smaller local employers still do. Given the parsing cost, omitting is the better default. Our guide to personal details on a Gulf CV covers the full field-by-field position.

India. Photos appear on many Indian CVs and on most job-portal profiles. For domestic applications it is unremarkable either way. For applications to multinationals with global hiring standards, or to any overseas market, remove it.

Netherlands and the Nordics. Optional and declining. Neither expected nor penalised. Omitting is the simpler choice.

Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia. Increasingly aligned with Western convention as international employers set the local standard. Optional, trending toward omission.

Two Rules That Override Everything

Follow the employer's instruction. If an application form has a photo upload field, use it. If a posting asks for an anonymised application, comply exactly. The employer's stated preference beats any national convention.

Upload rather than embed. Where a photo is wanted, prefer uploading it to the portal's photo field over embedding it in the document that gets parsed. You satisfy the convention without damaging the parse.

If You Do Include One

  • Professional headshot, plain background, current within about two years
  • Business or business-casual dress appropriate to your sector
  • Head and shoulders, facing the camera, neutral or lightly smiling
  • Not a cropped holiday photo, not a group shot, not a selfie
  • Top-right of a single-column layout, no text box
  • Keep the file size sensible so the PDF stays under any upload limit
