UX Designer Interview Questions
UX Designer hiring is decided by the portfolio more than the CV, and portfolio reviews are scored on reasoning rather than visual polish. Expect a portfolio presentation, a whiteboard or take-home design exercise, and a critique round. The recurring weakness is case studies that show the final screens but not the decisions, the constraints, or what the design achieved once shipped.

Portfolio deep dive
Presenting two or three case studies with your specific contribution, the constraints you worked under, and the outcome. Interviewers probe what you would do differently and what the design got wrong.
Design exercise
A whiteboard or take-home prompt where you scope the problem, sketch alternatives, and justify a direction. Scored on process visibility more than on the artefact.
Critique
Evaluating an existing interface. Interviewers test whether you critique against user goals and heuristics rather than personal taste.
Research and measurement
What research you ran, how you recruited, how you avoided leading questions, and how you measured whether the design worked.

Behavioural questions for ux designer roles
Prepare one STAR story per theme. A single strong story usually answers two or three of these prompts.
- Tell me about a design that failed after launch and what you learned.
- Describe a time you disagreed with a product manager about scope.
- Tell me about defending a design decision to an executive with a strong opinion.
- Describe working with engineers who said your design was not feasible.
- Tell me about designing under a severe time or technical constraint.

What do interviewers actually look for in a UX portfolio?+
Reasoning, not screens. The strongest case studies state the problem and how it was framed, the constraints (technical, timeline, business), the alternatives considered and why they were rejected, your specific contribution on a team, and what happened after launch with numbers. Beautiful final screens with no decision trail is the most common reason strong-looking portfolios fail reviews. Two or three deep case studies beat eight shallow ones.
How do I show impact as a UX Designer when I do not own the metrics?+
Use both usability and business measures, and be honest about attribution. Task success rate, time on task, error rate, and SUS scores from your own testing are directly attributable to your design. Alongside those, cite the product metric that moved after launch — conversion, completion, support ticket volume — while stating that it was a team outcome. Reviewers respond well to "cut support tickets about billing 40% after redesigning the invoice screen" because it links design work to a cost the business already tracks.
Is UX Designer the same as Product Designer?+
They increasingly overlap, with Product Designer implying a broader remit: more involvement in product strategy, metrics, and often visual and interaction design end to end. UX Designer can mean a research-heavier role in some organisations and a generalist one in others. Read the responsibilities rather than the title, and mirror the posting's own language on your CV — the same portfolio usually serves both, with the framing adjusted.
Do UX Designers need to know how to code?+
Not to write production code, but familiarity pays. Understanding what is cheap versus expensive to build, what a component library constrains, and how responsive layout actually behaves makes your designs more likely to ship as intended and earns credibility with engineers. Being able to read a component's props or make a small CSS change is genuinely useful; being expected to build features is a different role.
