RPA Developer Interview Questions
RPA interviews test whether you can tell an automatable process from one that should be fixed instead. Expect a process-design round, hands-on questions about a specific platform (usually UiPath, Automation Anywhere or Power Automate), and detailed probing on exception handling — because unattended bots fail silently and the cost of a bad automation is worse than no automation. CVs are read for hours saved and for bots that survived in production.
Build your story bank freeWhat rpa developer interviews are scored on
Process assessment
Given a described process, judge whether it is a good automation candidate — rule-based, stable, high volume, structured input — or whether the real answer is fixing the underlying system. Interviewers are checking that you would not automate a broken process.
Platform depth
Selectors and their fragility, orchestrator scheduling, queues and transactions, reusable components. Usually specific to one vendor, so read the posting.
Exception handling and resilience
Business versus system exceptions, retry logic, and what happens when a screen changes. The senior differentiator — juniors build happy-path bots.
Governance
Credential handling, audit logging, version control, and how a bot change gets tested and promoted. Increasingly weighted in regulated sectors.
Technical rpa developer interview questions
Questions of this shape recur across rpa developer loops. Practise them aloud — interviewers score how you reason, not only where you land.
- Walk me through how you decide whether a process is worth automating.
- A selector breaks every time the vendor updates the application. How do you make it resilient?
- Explain the difference between a business exception and a system exception, and how you handle each.
- Design a bot that processes 5,000 invoices overnight. What happens when it fails at item 3,200?
- How do you handle credentials in an unattended bot without hardcoding them?
- When would you use a queue-based (transactional) architecture over a linear one?
- The business says a process takes 4 hours; you observe it takes 40 minutes. How do you handle the ROI case?
Behavioural questions for rpa developer roles
Prepare one STAR story per theme. A single strong story usually answers two or three of these prompts.
- Tell me about an automation that broke in production. How did you find out and what changed?
- Describe a time you recommended against automating something.
- Tell me about handing a bot over to a support team.
- Describe working with a business owner who could not clearly articulate the process.
- Tell me about an automation whose actual savings came in well below the business case.
Numbers that make rpa developer answers credible
A STAR answer without a result is a story. These are the measures that carry weight in this role.
Questions worth asking your interviewer
- How many bots are in production, and who supports them when they break?
- Is there a CoE, and does it own governance or just delivery?
- How is ROI measured after a bot goes live, not just before?
- How much of the pipeline is genuine RPA versus API integration work?
RPA Developer interview FAQs
What does an RPA Developer interview focus on?+
Process judgement first, platform skill second. The round that decides most loops describes a business process and asks whether you would automate it — interviewers want to hear you check for rule-based logic, stable inputs, sufficient volume, and whether an API exists that would make the bot unnecessary. After that come platform-specific questions on selectors, orchestrator queues and reusable components, and a deep dive on exception handling, which is where unattended automation actually lives or dies.
Which RPA platform should I learn?+
UiPath has the largest share of job postings and the most transferable ecosystem, so it is the safest single choice. Automation Anywhere and Blue Prism remain common in large enterprises, particularly finance and insurance. Microsoft Power Automate is growing fastest because it arrives bundled with existing Microsoft licensing. The concepts transfer well between them, so depth in one plus familiarity with the vocabulary of the others is a stronger position than shallow exposure to three.
What metrics belong on an RPA Developer CV?+
Hours returned to the business, transactions processed, and bot reliability. "Automated invoice matching across 3 ERPs, processing 5,000 transactions/night at 99.4% straight-through rate and returning ~2,100 FTE-hours annually" works because it names volume, quality and value together. Also state how many bots you have in production and whether they are attended or unattended — unattended bots imply a much higher bar for exception handling.
Is RPA a dead end now that AI can automate processes?+
The field is changing rather than disappearing, but the change is real and worth positioning for. Straightforward screen-scraping work is being displaced by API integration and by AI-based document processing that handles unstructured input RPA never could. The developers doing well are the ones moving toward intelligent automation — combining bots with document understanding and decision models — and toward the process-analysis skills that hold value regardless of tooling. A CV that shows only screen automation on legacy applications is the exposed position.
