UI Designer Interview Questions
UI Designer interviews weight craft more heavily than UX roles — typography, spacing, hierarchy and colour are assessed directly — but modern hiring also expects systems thinking and enough accessibility knowledge to avoid shipping something unusable. Portfolios are judged on visual quality and on whether your decisions are defensible rather than decorative.
Build your story bank freeWhat ui designer interviews are scored on
Visual craft
Typography, spacing rhythm, hierarchy, colour and contrast, assessed directly through your portfolio and any exercise. The area where UI roles differ most from UX.
Design systems
Component structure, tokens, variants, and documentation. Increasingly the core of the job rather than an adjunct.
Design exercise
Redesigning a screen or building a component set to a brief, judged on decision-making as much as on the result.
Handoff and feasibility
How you specify for engineers, what you know about responsive behaviour and states, and whether your designs survive implementation.
Technical ui designer interview questions
Questions of this shape recur across ui designer loops. Practise them aloud — interviewers score how you reason, not only where you land.
- Walk me through your typographic scale and why you chose those steps.
- Redesign this settings screen. What is the hierarchy problem you are solving?
- How do you build a component with 6 variants without creating an unmaintainable mess?
- How do you check colour contrast, and what do you do when the brand palette fails AA?
- What states does a button need, and which do designers most often forget?
- How do you design a data table that works on mobile?
- How do you decide spacing values — and why not just eyeball it?
Behavioural questions for ui designer roles
Prepare one STAR story per theme. A single strong story usually answers two or three of these prompts.
- Tell me about design feedback you disagreed with. How did you handle it?
- Describe a design that did not survive implementation. What went wrong?
- Tell me about working within a brand or system you found restrictive.
- Describe convincing a stakeholder to simplify something.
- Tell me about a design you shipped and later thought was wrong.
Numbers that make ui designer answers credible
A STAR answer without a result is a story. These are the measures that carry weight in this role.
Questions worth asking your interviewer
- Is there a design system, and who owns it?
- How closely do designers work with engineers during build?
- How much visual latitude is there versus following brand?
- Is accessibility checked in the design phase or after?
UI Designer interview FAQs
What is the difference between a UI Designer and a UX Designer?+
UI focuses on the visual and interactive surface — typography, layout, colour, components, states. UX focuses on the problem and flow — research, information architecture, usability. In practice many roles combine both under the Product Designer title, and pure UI roles are most common at larger organisations with dedicated researchers, or in agency work. Read the responsibilities rather than the title: if the posting emphasises research and discovery it is a UX role regardless of what it is called.
What should a UI portfolio show?+
High-craft work with visible reasoning. Show the typographic scale and spacing system you used, not just finished screens; show component sets with their states and variants; show a before and after where you fixed a hierarchy problem and can articulate why the new version works. Reviewers are assessing craft directly, so quality of execution matters more here than in UX portfolios — but decoration without rationale reads as styling rather than design.
How much do UI designers need to know about accessibility?+
Enough to not ship something excluding people, and it is increasingly asked about directly. The practical minimum is colour contrast ratios and how to check them, focus states and visible focus indicators, touch target sizing, and not using colour alone to convey meaning. A common interview question is what you do when the brand palette fails AA contrast — a strong answer involves adjusting values for interface use while preserving brand identity, rather than either ignoring it or refusing to work.
Do UI designers still need to know how to code?+
Not to build production interfaces, but understanding how CSS layout actually behaves makes your designs far more likely to ship as intended. Knowing what flexbox and grid can do, how components handle overflow and long content, and what is expensive to build changes the designs you produce. Designers who hand over compositions that cannot responsively survive real content are the ones engineers quietly redesign.
