Solutions Architect Interview Questions

Solutions Architect interviews are conversation-led: you are assessed on how you handle ambiguity, elicit constraints, and defend trade-offs in front of people who may disagree. Expect an open-ended design round, questions about cost and delivery reality, and — in pre-sales-leaning roles — an exercise in explaining a technical decision to a non-technical audience.

What solutions architect interviews are scored on

Open-ended architecture design

A deliberately underspecified problem where the first move should be asking about scale, budget, timeline, existing estate and non-functional requirements. Jumping to a diagram is the classic failure.

Trade-off reasoning

Build versus buy, monolith versus services, managed versus self-hosted — and what you give up in each case. Interviewers push back to see whether you defend or fold.

Commercial awareness

What the design costs to build and run, and how it fits a delivery timeline and team capability. Architecture divorced from budget is a common weakness.

Communication

Explaining the same decision to an engineer and to a CFO. Central in customer-facing and pre-sales architecture roles.

Technical solutions architect interview questions

Questions of this shape recur across solutions architect loops. Practise them aloud — interviewers score how you reason, not only where you land.

  • A retailer wants to modernise a legacy monolith. Where do you start?
  • Design an integration between 3 systems that were never meant to talk to each other.
  • When would you recommend against microservices?
  • How do you design for a stated 99.9% availability target, and what does 99.99% add in cost?
  • The customer wants multi-cloud. How do you evaluate whether they should?
  • How do you architect for a team that does not yet have the skills to run it?
  • Explain your architecture decision to a CFO who wants to know why it costs what it does.

Behavioural questions for solutions architect roles

Prepare one STAR story per theme. A single strong story usually answers two or three of these prompts.

  • Tell me about an architecture you recommended that was rejected.
  • Describe a design that failed in production. What did you miss?
  • Tell me about telling a customer or stakeholder they were asking for the wrong thing.
  • Describe balancing an ideal architecture against a delivery deadline.
  • Tell me about aligning engineering and business stakeholders who disagreed.

Numbers that make solutions architect answers credible

A STAR answer without a result is a story. These are the measures that carry weight in this role.

Questions worth asking your interviewer

  • Is this role customer-facing, internal, or pre-sales?
  • How much authority does architecture have over delivery decisions?
  • How are architecture decisions documented and revisited?
  • What is the gap between the current estate and where you want to be?

Solutions Architect interview FAQs

What do Solutions Architect interviews actually test?+

Whether you gather constraints before designing. The signature round gives you a deliberately vague problem, and strong candidates spend the first several minutes asking questions — expected scale, budget, timeline, existing systems, team capability, compliance requirements, availability targets — before proposing anything. Candidates who start drawing boxes immediately are marked down regardless of the quality of the architecture, because the failure being tested for is designing confidently for the wrong problem.

How is a Solutions Architect different from a Software Architect?+

Solutions Architects design across systems and often across organisational boundaries, frequently customer-facing and with heavy commercial input. Software Architects go deeper within one system or product, closer to the code and the engineering team. Solutions roles weight communication, trade-off negotiation and cost; software architecture roles weight technical depth. Enterprise Architect sits above both, concerned with portfolio-level standards rather than individual solutions.

What metrics belong on a Solutions Architect CV?+

Scale, commercial outcome and adoption. Systems or users the architecture serves, cost of the solution and any savings against the alternative, delivery timeline achieved, and whether what you designed was actually built and adopted. "Designed the integration platform connecting 12 systems for 8,000 users, delivered in 7 months against a 12-month estimate and £1.4M under the vendor alternative" works because architecture is judged on delivered outcomes rather than diagrams.

Do I need certifications for architecture roles?+

Cloud provider architect certifications — AWS Solutions Architect Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert — carry genuine weight, particularly in consultancies and for partner-status reasons, and are often used as screening filters. TOGAF appears in enterprise architecture functions. That said, they establish credibility rather than capability: interviews test whether you can hold an ambiguous design conversation, and no certification prepares you for that. Get the one matching your target cloud, then practise designing aloud.
