Data analyst career path
Data analyst is one of the most flexible starting points in tech. SQL, metrics and explaining numbers to decision makers carry into several more specialized jobs. The standard ladder runs from senior analyst to analytics manager. But plenty of analysts leave the title within a few years for analytics engineering, data science or product analytics. The ones who stall stay on report requests and never own a business question.

What each move takes
Why each move fits, the skills hiring managers look for, and the proof to have on your resume before you apply.
Analytics engineer
Sideways move1,818 open US jobs$115K-$159K advertised
Analytics engineering turns the SQL you write for reports into tested, documented tables that everyone else queries. It's usually built in dbt, a tool for managing SQL like code. Pick it if you'd rather fix the data than present it.
- Usually when
- 1-3 years in, especially if you already write the SQL models behind your dashboards
- Skills to add
- dbt (models, tests, documentation)
- Git and pull request workflow
- Dimensional modeling
- Snowflake or BigQuery
- dbt Analytics Engineering Certification
- Have this on your resume first
- Transformations you built and maintained that other analysts or dashboards depended on, ideally with tests.
Product analyst
Sideways move1,452 open US jobs$90K-$135K advertised
Same SQL and metric work, pointed at how people use the product. Funnels, retention and experiments put you much closer to the calls product teams make every week.
- Usually when
- Any time after a year or two
- Skills to add
- Amplitude or Mixpanel
- Event tracking plans
- Funnel and cohort retention analysis
- A/B test readouts
- Have this on your resume first
- An analysis of user behavior that led to a product change, and what the change was.
Data scientist
Step up6,245 open US jobs$125K-$131K advertised
You already write the SQL, define the metrics and explain the results. Data science puts statistics and modeling on top of that.
- Usually when
- 2-4 years in, once you're reading out experiment results or building forecasts
- Skills to add
- Python with pandas and scikit-learn
- Hypothesis testing and experiment design
- Regression and classification models
- Causal inference basics
- Have this on your resume first
- An analysis that went past totals and averages, like an experiment readout or a forecast, and the decision it informed.
Analytics manager
Step up2,842 open US jobs$138K-$159K advertised
Analytics managers decide which questions get answered and make sure a metric means the same thing in every meeting. If you already push back on low-value requests, you're halfway there.
- Usually when
- 4-6 years in, usually after mentoring other analysts and owning metric definitions
- Skills to add
- Prioritizing a request queue against strategic work
- A semantic layer such as LookML or the dbt Semantic Layer
- Hiring and coaching analysts
- Presenting to executives
- Have this on your resume first
- Metric definitions or self-serve reporting you led, and the analysts you trained or reviewed.
Strategy and operations manager

Strategy and ops teams do the analysis, then own the recommendation and see it through, often on pricing or planning. Presenting to leadership is the harder half, and you may already do it.
- Usually when
- 3-5 years in, if the business decision interests you more than the data behind it
- Skills to add
- Financial modeling in Excel or Google Sheets
- Unit economics and pricing analysis
- Annual planning and OKR processes
- Hypothesis-driven problem solving (issue trees)
- Have this on your resume first
- Recommendations you made to leadership that were acted on, with the business result.

Questions data analysts ask
Is data analyst a dead-end job?
Only if the job stays reactive. Years of filling report requests leave you little to show. Owning a business area's questions builds a record that leads to analytics engineering, data science or strategy roles. Ask to own a metric instead of taking more tickets.
Should I move into analytics engineering or data science?
Choose analytics engineering if you like making data reliable and reusable, and you're the one who rewrites the messy query everyone copies. Choose data science if you want to answer harder questions with statistics and experiments. Analytics engineering is usually the faster move, because it builds straight on SQL.
How long should you stay a data analyst before moving on?
Stay until you can point to one or two decisions your work changed. That usually takes a couple of years in one business area. Leaving sooner is fine if the next role gives you more ownership. Leaving only because the title feels junior tends to land you in the same work somewhere else.
